No. 1 pick Fultz out 3 games for 76ers with sore shoulder

first_imgRead Next Brace for potentially devastating typhoon approaching PH – NDRRMC As for the ugly shot, did Fultz change his mechanics because his shoulder hurt or does his shoulder hurt because he changed his mechanics? Even that isn’t really clear, though the latter seems more likely.“I don’t dismiss that it could have been a possibility,” Brown said.Fultz, though, now has a spot on the Injured 76ers Rookies list that boasts such recent prospects as Nerlens Noel, Joel Embiid and Ben Simmons. That trio of first-round picks all missed their rookie seasons (Embiid missed his first two) and Fultz for now is only scheduled to miss Wednesday’s game against the Houston Rockets and road games Saturday at Dallas and Monday at Houston.“I think that we all understand there were some things going on,” coach Brett Brown said. “I feel like it’s a time where we can take a deep breath and help move him forward in a cleaner way.”Fultz is shooting 33 percent, 50 percent from the free-throw line and has not attempted a 3-point shot all season, all as a reserve.“I watched hundreds and hundreds of his shots,” Brown said. “I get so excited because you see so clearly why he was the first player chosen. The kid is a baller. He can really play.”ADVERTISEMENT The 76ers traded the No. 3 overall pick and a future first-round pick to the Boston Celtics for the No. 1 pick with the intention of drafting Fultz. Team president Bryan Colangelo said there had been “no medical reason” not to play Fultz this season and the shoulder had no structural damage.“At some point, you’ve got to know your body can no longer go through certain things,” Embiid said.Colangelo and the Sixers were caught on their heels for the second time this season over the severity of their stars’ injuries. The Sixers said in January that Embiid was out with swelling and a bone bruise in his left knee until news broke it was actually a torn meniscus. It’s difficult to imagine the Sixers would have said Fultz was treated with a shot had it not been for the agent’s erroneous statement to ESPN.“I think we are unfairly scrutinized, sometimes,” Brown said. “I understand we have been put in funnysituations.”The Sixers have made a heavy investment the last few years in their medical department, building a new training complex that offers round-the-clock care. The team sent out a press release when it hired itsfirst-ever “Vice President of Athlete Care.”But no amount of sports science has kept Philadelphia’s cornerstones healthy. The fact that Fultz even played has gone against one of the core principles of “The Process,” which is patience. The Sixers did not hesitate to shut down Noel, Embiid and Simmons and never wavered in the decision not to play them, even at times when they were dunking and shooting 3s in warmups.Brown was stymied at times in a pregame scrum that featured nearly three dozen members of the media andfelt more like a “60 Minutes” interrogation than a loose Q&A.How could you tell the injury affected Fultz?“I don’t want to comment on that.” Fultz has made the wrong kind of headlines in his brief tenure for shooting mechanics that resemble something akin to a toddler learning to shoot a basketball. Take a quick scan of YouTube videos, and highlights of the 6-foot-4 guard out of Washington can be found under the titles “Markelle Fultz Gruesome Free Throws ,” ”This Is Why Markelle Fultz’s Free Throws Look Like Trash” and “Are the 76ers Cursed?”Cursed? Fultz’s agent caused a brief panic this week when he said Fultz had fluid drained from his shoulder. The truth was, Fultz simply had a cortisone injection this month to treat the shoulder — a procedure the Sixers curiously did not reveal until the facts became confounding. Nova Scotia town grapples with deer problem considers contraceptives cull

first_imgTRURO, N.S. – If you drive through the central Nova Scotia town of Truro, chances are you will encounter a deer or two — or maybe three or even more. The town’s deer population has multiplied noticeably in recent years and officials are considering options including contraceptives and a cull in a bid to control the growing urban herd. The deer have become common sights on downtown streets and in people’s gardens, to the point where a public information session is to be held Tuesday night at the local fire hall as part of consultations aimed at producing a long-term strategy.“One of the basic questions we are asking is … do you think deer are a problem in town?” Truro’s chief administrator, Mike Dolter, said in a telephone interview Monday.“I think in some cases we are going to get a split on that. Some people see them as an issue and other people see them as just a nice part about being in town — that they are actually here in an urban setting.”Deer have even been spotted outside meetings held to discuss the deer problem, he said. One scampered across the parking lot during a meeting to organize the information session, he said, while others were spotted outside a recent town council meeting discussing, again, deer.“There were six deer on the lawn by the United Church right beside town hall,” he said.Dolter said options under consideration include stronger enforcement of the current no-feeding bylaws, a contraception program to reduce the deer population over several years, or even a potential cull.Dolter said although other Canadian communities have used culls, Truro officials see it as an “extreme last resort measure.”He said the idea of contraception might be “more palatable” to people and the town is in talks with the provincial Natural Resources Department.Dolter said one idea advanced by a retired U.P.E.I. veterinary professor involves using dart-borne contraceptives that can be fired with an air rifle. In the meantime, Dolter said one big problem is that some people are feeding the deer, and stronger public education is needed. The town fined a local woman $233.95 for feeding deer in her backyard in 2015.“It’s not good for the deer and it’s not good for the community,” Dolter said of such feeding.Truro is home to a large urban park that draws the deer because it touches on their rural habitat, he said.“If they stayed in the park we’d all be very happy, but obviously they migrate out because they are looking for food … and they stay in town.”Dolter said it’s hoped a strategy can be put in place by sometime this fall.— By Keith Doucette in Halifaxlast_img read more

Here Are The Week 11 Games That Will Most Affect The College

The previous two games each contained a couple of teams with intact national championship aspirations, however strained. In this game, however, the three-loss Cardinal is basically eliminated from playoff contention — yet could still play spoiler to the 8-1 Huskies, who are right on the edge of playoff contention. Right now, Washington has a 31 percent chance of making the playoff, good for sixth-best in the country; those odds would jump to 48 percent with a win but fall to practically nonexistent (3 percent) with a loss. And Stanford is no pushover, record notwithstanding: It currently ranks 14th in ESPN’s Football Power Index, with a rating roughly equal to that of Miami. The Huskies are still favored to win by our model (we give them a 63 percent chance), but they’ll have to play their best football against Heisman contender Bryce Love and the Cardinal in order to keep their CFP hopes above sea level. One more notable aspect of this game is just how much effect it could have on other teams in the playoff race. No fewer than 10 teams figure to see their own CFP odds change by at least 1 percentage point based on the outcome of Washington and Stanford’s tilt, with most of those contenders rooting for a Husky loss. (Because Stanford would only have a 1 percent playoff probability even if it wins, this is the rare case of a realistically probable upset where the would-be victor poses little threat to other top teams.) Add in the extra twist of it taking place on Friday night, and this one could reshape the playoff race before Saturday’s games even get a chance to kick off.4. Georgia at Auburn (3:30 p.m. EST, Saturday)33.1 percentage points of total swing How Notre Dame-Miami changes the college football playoff picture Auburn8.4-7.7+9.4+8.5 This might not be the marquee game-of-the-week you were expecting (more on that one later), but it will undeniably change the complexion of the playoff race. Both teams are 5-1 within the Big 12, so the winner will have sole possession of first place with two games left in the regular season. Our model has the Sooners as the nation’s fourth most likely team to make the CFP, with a 42 percent playoff probability. That number would rise to 58 percent if the Sooners win, paving the way for a likely berth in the Big 12’s newly revived conference championship game, though it would drop to 15 percent if they lose. And TCU isn’t out of the CFP race, either; the Horned Frogs rank ninth with a 23 percent probability of making the playoff. If it wins, TCU’s own odds would rise to 46 percent — placing it firmly within the CFP conversation down the season’s final stretch — while a loss would all but eliminate the Frogs (knocking them down to 8 percent). Such a large potential swing in CFP probability — plus the small peripheral effect it will have on the odds for both Notre Dame (a TCU win would boost the Irish’s chances by clearing Oklahoma out of their way) and Ohio State (whose head-to-head loss to the Sooners looks worse with every OU loss) — make this the week’s most important game.2. The game will carry with it echoes of the “Catholics vs. Convicts” rivalry from decades ago, and with good reason — according to our Elo ratings (adding up the pregame ratings of both teams), this is easily the best matchup of these two classic college-football powers since 1989. The Hurricanes won back then, but our model gives the Irish a 61 percent chance of coming out on top this time around. If they do, Notre Dame’s odds of making the playoff would rise from 30 percent to 47 percent,3Although Notre Dame would still likely need to beat Navy and Stanford on the road, there’s also a pretty good case to be made that our model is understating Notre Dame’s chances, given how frequently they get the benefit of the doubt from college football’s institutions. But that’s a subject for another time. while a loss would drop the Irish’s playoff odds to 3 percent. For the undefeated ’Canes, a win would vault them from 25 percent to 45 percent, and a loss would send them down to 13 percent. The Irish in particular would really struggle to make the playoff as a two-loss team, because unlike two-loss fringe contenders like Ohio State or USC, the Irish will not have a conference championship against a quality opponent to pad the resume.3. Auburn has plenty of talent — it’s the eighth-best team in the country according to FPI — and it will also be at home, a big reason why our model has UGA as only a narrow favorite to extend its undefeated record against the Tigers. Needless to say, the playoff implications of this game are enormous. The Bulldogs, at 57 percent to make the CFP, could bolster those odds up to 70 percent with a win or see them fall to 42 percent with a loss. The latter scenario wouldn’t be a complete catastrophe for Georgia, but it would make its playoff path a lot more daunting, with Alabama (or maybe Auburn!) potentially looming in the SEC title game. For Auburn’s part, the two-loss Tigers sit at 8 percent to make the playoff, and those chances would rise only to 18 percent if they knock off UGA. But that would improve their chances of forcing ’Bama into a must-win Iron Bowl to get into the SEC championship, one of the Tigers’ few viable paths to possibly making the playoff. The only thing keeping this matchup from ranking higher is its relatively limited effect on the rest of the country — aside from Notre Dame and Clemson rooting for a Georgia loss, there aren’t many implications here outside of the SEC.Honorable mentions: Alabama at Mississippi State (23.2 points of swing); Iowa at Wisconsin (22.7); Florida State at Clemson (21.9); Michigan State at Ohio State (13.4).Check out our latest college football predictions. Ohio State baseball captains Sergakis and Washington lead veteran club into 2016

Credit: Courtesy of OSUThe Ohio State baseball team is returning 20 letterwinners for the 2016 season, giving coach Greg Beals plenty of hope that his team will be able to improve upon last season’s 35-20 finish. To bolster their record, the Buckeyes will be looking to their newly appointed team captains, senior infielder Nick Sergakis and junior catcher Jalen Washington. For the pair of upperclassmen, each said they were humbled by being selected captains by their teammates, but for Columbus native Sergakis, it stands for a little bit more.“It meant the world to me,” Sergakis said. “I respect these guys more than anyone, and for them to vote me into this position, it means a lot. It’s something that you dream of when you’re a little kid to grow up and be the guy that everyone looks up to — that leader. It’s a position that I’ve worked hard for. I appreciate (being) the leader of these guys.”For Washington, the 2015 offseason included moving from infielder to catcher, a position which he’s never played for OSU. Beals said that his unselfish mindset, paired with his relentless work ethic, are the main reasons why Washington was named a team captain.“Jalen’s going to be the No. 1 catcher this year,” Beals said. “He’s been a utility player in his previous time here. He had a great summer and he had a great fall. I’m really excited about him.”OSU senior Nick Sergakis smiles during the Ohio State baseball team’s photo day on Sept. 30 at at Bill Davis Stadium. Credit: Courtesy of OSUBeals said he knows if the Buckeyes want to reach their team goal of bringing home a Big Ten championship, his captains will have to lead the way for a team that finished 13-11 in conference play last year.  “I love those two guys,” Beals said. “I love all the guys on our team, but those guys really exemplify great, hard-working guys that are willing to do whatever it takes for the ball club. Both of them have earned their captains nominations vote by what they’ve done on the field.” Washington, however, wasn’t on the field all that much for OSU in 2015.He played sparingly, appearing in only 15 games, mainly as a utility infielder. He had a .280 batting average in 25 at-bats. “I think what’s really special is a guy like Jalen Washington, who’s not been a regular player in his time here, to be voted captain speaks a lot for the young man and the type of work he does on a daily basis,” Beals said.Washington said the switch to catcher has been a grind, but he is excited for his chance to be an impact player for the Buckeyes.Sergakis, perhaps known more for his defense thanks to a No. 1 play on SportsCenter’s Top 10 last year, closed out 2015 with a .957 fielding percentage over 51 starts at second and third base. Sergakis said he hopes to return to form at the plate after his average dipped from .318 in 2014 to .250 in 2015.“I’m trying to get back to the same hitter I was when I first came in and through the first portion of last year,” Sergakis said. “I think hitting has been a big part, and I think I’ve improved my game.”Washington said the team is hungry and will be ready to get the 2016 campaign underway. The Buckeyes are scheduled to begin their 133rd season of baseball in the Dodgertown Classic, where they are set to play three games against Niagara, Pittsburgh and Toledo on Feb. 19-21 in Vero Beach, Florida. read more

The Buckeyes fell to the Beavers 3-1 on Friday and 6-2 the next day.The Buckeyes jumped out to a one-goal lead in the first period on Friday night off of a goal from freshman defenseman Lauren Boyle, giving the Scarlet and Gray the needed early momentum to pull off an upset on the road. However, Bemidji State was able to tie it up off a goal from Alexis Joyce in the second. The Beavers led in shots 17-6 in the second period. The home team then scored the go-ahead goal 6:53 into the third period for the Beavers’ first lead of the game. OSU sophomore goalie Alex LaMere let one more goal past her off of a shot from Hanna Moher to give the Beavers the 3-1 win.Despite taking the loss in the Friday night game, LaMere was able to stop 42 of 45 shots, which was a career high for her. On Saturday, the Beavers were the team with the quick start as they took a one-goal lead within the first three minutes of the game. They followed that up with another goal two minutes later. Joyce and Kaitlyn Tougas scored the goals for Bemidji State.Cara Zubko got OSU on the board with less than four minutes left in the first period to prevent the game from getting ugly early. The senior defenseman was assisted by freshman forward Maddy Field and junior forward Claudia Kepler. However, the ugliness eventually arrived. The Beavers added four straight goals in the second and third periods to bring the score up to a 6-1 advantage. Field scored for the Buckeyes with less than two minutes remaining, but Bemidji State easily took home the win with a four-goal advantage.Despite a larger final goal deficit on Saturday, the Buckeyes held with the Beavers in terms of shots. The Beavers only had a 34-32 advantage on the night.Bemidji State goes into its final series of the regular season sitting in third in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association standings, while the Buckeyes sit second from last in seventh place. The Buckeyes will be looking to break their five-game losing streak next weekend in the final series of the regular season against No. 9 North Dakota. The two teams squared off in mid-November, when the Buckeyes and Fighting Hawks split the series. The puck is scheduled to drop at the OSU Ice Rink at 7:07 p.m. on Friday and 4:07 p.m. on Saturday, with the latter game representing the team’s senior day. read more

Dembeles agent denies any indiscipline at Barcelona

first_imgWith all the negative press that Ousmane Dembele has been getting these past few days in Barcelona, his agent had to come out and defend him.The situation with French winger Ousmane Dembele in Barcelona has reached an important boiling point, there have been several reports of his complete indifference towards his club’s main cause and it has been proven through his late showings to games and training sessions.Just this Monday, the player got a whole new dig from his France manager and confirmed that Dembele does arrive late regularly but he always has an excuse to justify his actions. This really seems to be getting out of control for the player, who hadn’t gotten any type of defense from anybody in the most recent hours until his agent came out to defend him during an interview for RMC Sports.Moussa Sissoko, the former player who turned agent and now manages the careers of several players from his country, was asked about the situation with Dembele this Monday and his response hinted at a possible health-related problem that the player has been going through lately. The main reaction from Sissoko was to confirm that everything that’s being said about Ousmane is fake news, and he even went further.🔉Moussa Sissoko(Dembele’s agent): The criticism of Ousmane Dembele is overblown””All these criticisms make me laugh. “It had already begun with a so-called delay at the meeting before the Champions League match against Inter. pic.twitter.com/ALITdj3wbL— Blaugrana Nation (@Blaugranarealm) November 12, 2018The young star’s agent said that he has been in direct contact with several members of the club to assess the situation with his player, he revealed that the people at the club are very happy with him and there is no truth to everything that’s being said about the kid.“Ousmane is still working hard in a great club, the manager appreciates him, just like Deschamps does in the French National Team,” said Sissoko during the interview.“I also know that Abidal is very happy with everything he’s doing, he knows that he is training very well.”“All the criticism he is getting has a reason, we all know that he needs to improve on several things, but that is completely normal at his age.”“There is a lot of people who are on his toes, there was a rumor about him coming in late before a match, but the manager already clarified this situation. Now, he is suffering from gastroenteritis.”David Villa, FC BarcelonaTop 10 players who played for both Barcelona and Valencia Boro Tanchev – September 14, 2019 Time to talk about the best players who represented both Barcelona and Valencia, prior to their La Liga encounter at Camp Nou this evening.“Although it’s true that he called the club late for that, he did it because he was very sick. Dembele had a great start of the season.”“People want to create controversy where there is none, but Dembele has the capacity to navigate through anything,” he added.🎙 [RMCSport] | Sissoko (Dembélés agent): “Barcelona is very happy with Ousmane, Valverde appreciates him and Abidal is also happy of how Dembélé is performing and training.” pic.twitter.com/TPujrlo7Bu— BarcaTimes (@BarcaTimes) November 12, 2018As of right now, Ousmane Dembele is part of the France squad for the last international break of 2018 where Les Bleus will play against The Netherlands and Uruguay.Dembele is considered an essential part of the squad that manager Didier Deschamps took to the World Cup final last summer, the Barcelona player wasn’t a prominent part of that squad and his intention is to change the manager’s mind in order to claim his position alongside other great players such as Antoine Griezmann or Kylian Mbappé.There is a massive contrast between the type of indiscipline that the PSG winger is showing, to the one that Dembele has been accused of lately.Having an important level of activity for France during the next couple of weeks, should be a good enough motivation for him to return to Barcelona with the objective of winning back the trust of all his teammates and the manager. The most worrisome part of all this, is that Dembele wasn’t cheap and losing a talent like him would be one of the Catalan club’s biggest mistakes. After all, we are talking about the most expensive player that has ever arrived in Barcelona.Rassemblés à Clairefontaine depuis ce midi, les Bleus ont effectué une séance légère en début de soirée. pic.twitter.com/WI8vWZV6Kr— Equipe de France ⭐⭐ (@equipedefrance) November 12, 2018What do you think Ousmane Dembele should do in order to gain back the trust from his club and country? first_imgChelsea striker Olivier Giroud revealed that Gonzalo Higuain’s arrival certainly darkens his future and opened the door towards a potential return to France. The French World Cup winner left his homeland in 2012 for Arsenal after helping Montpellier beat Paris Saint-Germain to the Ligue 1 title.Last year then saw Giroud make a controversial switch to Arsenal’s London rivals Chelsea after a lack of game time at the Emirates Stadium. However, under coach Maurizio Sarri, Giroud has fared little better with just six starts in the Premier League this season. This has led to reports linking Giroud with a return to France with both Marseille and Lyon.Speaking to CANAL Foot Club, prior to Higuain’s arrival last week, Giroud indicated a return to Ligue 1 could happen even if his priority is to remain in England.“I will never make people unanimously satisfied with me,” admitted Giroud.Harry Maguire, Manchester UnitedLiverpool legend Nicol slams Harry Maguire’s Man United form Andrew Smyth – September 14, 2019 Steve Nicol believes Harry Maguire has made some “horrendous mistakes” recently, and has failed to find his best form since joining Manchester United.“There is a little part of regret and frustration. The public expects a goalscorer to score goals. I’m the fourth best goalscorer of French football and nobody can take that away from me.“The coach makes [Eden] Hazard play nine which is detrimental to strikers. But he is the best player I’ve ever played with.“If the club decides to get another striker, like Higuain, it will certainly darken my future at Chelsea.“I’ve never said no to a return to France. Lyon and Marseille are two great clubs. My priority is to stay in the Premier League though.”Higuain made his Chelsea debut on Sunday in their 3-0 FA Cup win over Sheffield Wednesday at Stamford Bridge and was replaced by Giroud in the 82nd-minute of the fourth-round clash. The Blues will next take a trip to the Vitality Stadium where they will face Bournemouth in a Premier League match on Wednesday with kick-off set for 20:45 (CET).last_img read more
