2010 FIFA World Cup™ celebrations ‘flagged’through launch of national flag pledge radiothon.1 May 2010, Johannesburg – Brand South Africa marks today’s 40 days to the kick off of the 2010 FIFA World Cup™ with the launch of a national ‘Fly the Flag’ challenge through which companies and individuals can pledge to buy, distribute and fly the national flag. This 40 day flag pledge will continue into the 30 day countdown potentially, and will provide every South African with a flag to fly – shaping the Nation’s celebrations. As of Saturday 1st May, South Africans can make their flag pledge/s by SMSing the word ‘flag’ to 32175 and thereby “celebrate the first time the 2010 FIFA World Cup™ is being held on African soil,” said Sophie Masipa, Marketing Manager of the International Marketing Council of South Africa, custodian of Brand South Africa. “It is our quest to literally ‘Flag’ South Africa.”Brand South Africa is further celebrating the 40 day milestone with a fly-by of the South African Air Force helicopter pulling the national flag within each of the host cities, various street corner activations and diski dance activations at taxi ranks and shopping malls.“We want to see our national flag, a symbol of unity and hope for future generations, flown far and wide across the country. From building wraps to office park entrances and in our neighbourhoods, we want to paint the nation with pride through our country’s most visual representation,”s he said. Masipa also urged government departments, provinces, host cities and municipalities to fly the flag with pride.Masipa added that the initiative is a demonstration that the national flag is for every South African – a representation of our people no matter where we live in the world, regardless of background and without relevance to personal beliefs.“Our flag unites us all under a common future and makes us a strong nation,” she said. “It is representative of our future aspirations as a nation.”As hosts of the 2010 FIFA World Cup™, South Africans and Africans are on the eve of welcoming thousands of potential Brand SA advocates to our country and continent. South Africans can demonstrate their support for the Nation Brand by joining in celebrations such as these, through which we are welcoming the world to our country.Other South African mobilisation campaigns include Football Friday, The People’s Bus and the Diski Dance. “It is imperative that we actively show our support for our national football team, Bafana Bafana – a South African brand ambassador representing us on the World Cup’s centre stage,” concluded Masipa.Suppliers Contact Details: 1. 9 July 2012The introduction of electronic visas would serve both to grow tourism volumes and to create new job opportunities in Africa, Tourism Minister Marthinus van Schalkwyk said on Sunday.“There are opportunities to accelerate the creation of regional visa schemes,” Van Schalkwyk said at the opening of the 2012 Routes Africa Conference in the Seychelles.“This would allow our international visitors and intra-African travellers to move more freely and efficiently, to the benefit of our continent.”E-visas are currently only offered by a few countries, such as Australia, the United States, Bahrain and India. The process of applying for an e-visa involves completing the visa application form online, on a secure website. The development of secure electronic transactions integrated into a website’s payment system has made electronic commerce an increasingly popular option; it involves a “secure electronic transaction” (SET), which makes use of several layers of encryption to protect sensitive information.E-visas are being introduced by more countries around the world as a convenient way to apply to visit that country because it is not necessary to visit the country’s consulate in person.Van Schalkwyk said the continent had a long way to go to capitalise on its unique attractions and cultural diversity, but that visa barriers still needed to be overcome. Making use of technology would help in developing high security measures while creating efficient travelling.“The bureaucracy and costs involved in applying for and issuing visas are a major impediment to foreigners wishing to visit our shores, and to our own people who travel on our continent,” he said.Another barrier, he said, was old air connectivity models. “They inhibit growth and only serve to keep our destinations dependent on air arrivals from economically hard- pressed traditional source markets.“We need a long-term plan to create an intra-continental air transport architecture that facilitates intra-African travel and trade, including tourism,” Van Schalkwyk explained.New-model lower cost airlines that could cater for market segments that are currently underserved were also needed on the continent. The African continent is on the verge of an unprecedented tourism boom over the next two decades. “In a mere three years from now, there will be just over 50 African cities with populations exceeding three million,” he said.SANews.gov.za and SAinfo reporter
Wrap gifts show your crew that they were worth a little extra time and some personal consideration. Here are five ideas for gifts they can actually use.Cover image via Travelchair. The wrap party is the final act of the production — a time for the crew to come together and celebrate the completion of the shoot. This is especially true for producers, directors, and department heads. A good set or department leader knows to take this opportunity to make their crew feel valued beyond their paycheck. What’s a great way to do this? Wrap gifts.Wrap Party GiftsHere are some ideas for gifts that will help your crew out on their next job — or at least make it more comfortable.1. NotebooksNotebooks are one of the most important tools on any set. Two that I absolutely love are Elan’s Indestructible, Weatherproof Field Notebooks and the Rocketbook Everlast.(Image via Elan Publishing.)The Indestructible Field Notebook is just that: pocket-sized and unbreakable. It’ll work just the same regardless of whatever wild location you might be shooting in.(Image via Rocketbook.)The Rocketbook Everlast is something else entirely. It is a washable, re-usable notebook (already awesome) that kicks it up a notch with some amazing “cloud-scalability.” Translated from techno-jargon: you can use their app to save your notes on Google Drive, Dropbox, or a handful of other supported apps. It is a super quick and effective way to organize and archive your notes. It also looks like they offer custom designs. If the budget permits, order custom books with the production logo on the cover.2. Yeti Drinkware(Image via Yeti.)I’m not a big brand purist normally. Yeti makes lots of amazing drink ware, but what separates them from the myriad of other similar products is that they offer custom designs. Like the Everlast, if you can afford it, get them show-branded.All of Yeti’s products are fantastic at insulating beverages in hot or cold environments. Like the Indestructible Notebook, no matter where your crew’s future sets take them, they’ll be a little better off thanks to this gift. One thing to consider: the classic Yeti tumbler is a sensation. Many people already have several. Consider some of their other designs to stand out a little more.3. ExpendablesOn almost every set, there are tons of leftover expendables the production has to purchase. Consider assembling packages of these remaining materials as a gesture to the crew.Place an extra high priority on gaff tape. Every department uses it. Extra points if you have enough left over to give each member a couple rolls apiece.4. Power Banks and USB Hubs(Image via Anker.)Power banks have become awesome over the past few years. Many companies offer branded banks, but most of them are pretty worthless. Do a little research before purchasing these for your crew. Anker makes great, affordable banks.A quick power bank tip: look for banks with 10400 mAh or greater. This will give the user 2-3 full charges on their phone. Also, make sure it can output 2.1 Amps.(Image via Anker.)USB hubs are super useful — especially to anyone who works on their computer while on set. Look for hubs with multiple USB 3.1 ports, and consider that many people on set own Macbooks, so make sure the bank has USB Type-C options on the back end.5. Portable Folding Chairs(Image via AlexSN_Photography.)These are pretty self-explanatory. Small, collapsable camping stools are an easy addition to anyone’s kit. Like the Yeti bottles, these are super useful, and they can bring huge relief to hectic sets or shoots in extreme locations.Coleman makes several options that look great, but there are hundreds of other options available.(Image via Travelchair.)I prefer the small stools over full chairs simply for their smaller footprint when stowed. The best chair is the one you always have with you.All of these ideas are simply to get you thinking. Feel free to take all of them or none of them, but the biggest thing you can do for your crew is to show you appreciate them as individuals. Find a way to meet a need they all share. Showing thoughtfulness in your gifts will earn you so much more credit with your team than anything on this list.Looking for more on filmmaking gear? Oh, and don’t forgetA UNC player lost a video game an broke his hand, as your Duke fan friend probably already texted to you. Things That Caught My EyeThe Most Improved Player has really improvedWith an average of 36.8 points in the first four games of the season, Giannis “The Greek Freak” Antetokounmpo of the Milwaukee Bucks sure as heck looks like an MVP contender this year. The kid is only 22 years old and is hot off last year’s Most Improved Player award. [FiveThirtyEight]They say there are Angelenos still sitting in post-game traffic to this very dayIt was an 11-inning absurdity Wednesday night in L.A., with a win probabilty chart that causes bona fide whiplash just looking at it. Houston notched their first-ever franchise World Series win in what will go down as an ultimate case study in both why the east coast hates extra innings and also how to perfectly mismanage a bullpen: The Dodgers used nine pitchers in Game 2 after pulling Rich Hill despite throwing just four excellent innings. [FiveThirtyEight]Irish not in control of own destiny, per usualNotre Dame is 6-1 this year, but despite that record and the strong chance that a one-loss team will make the College Football Playoff, they’re still only an 11 percent chance to make the postseason. Indeed, even if they win out — they have a 21 percent chance of doing so — their destiny is still in the hands of others since they won’t have a conference title to bring up in their bid to get in over other one-loss teams. [FiveThirtyEight]32nd time is the charmPenn State (No. 2) faces Ohio (No. 6) this weekend in what will be the biggest Big Ten game of the entire year. It’s a pretty solid rivalry: They’ve played 31 times in the AP ranking era, and 30 of those times one of the two teams was ranked. FiveThirtyEight has Ohio State as the favorite here, with a 61 percent chance to win in Columbus. An Ohio State win would decimate Penn State’s chances of winning the conference and more than halve their chances of making the playoff. A Penn State win, probabilistically speaking, basically ends Ohio State’s season and gives the Nittany Lions a 69 percent chance of making the playoffs. [ESPN, FiveThirtyEight]Golden Knights: pretty good! The Vegas Golden Knights are off to a terrific start, sitting atop the Western Conference at 6-1. By all appearances, Vegas has some of the best talent of any expansion team in NHL history back 1991. The average expansion team since then has put up 57 points in its first season, which is awful: Only four normal teams in the past four seasons did that. [FiveThirtyEight]The return of the kingRoberto Aguayo is a kicker who was drafted in the second round of the 2016 draft by the Bucs. Read that sentence again. Kicker, second round, Bucs. Remember that insanity? Anyway, his NFL debut was not up to second-round drafted Bucs kicker standards apparently and he was cut on national television in a preseason game. Well he’s back, and with no more ridiculous expectations to live up to on the Panthers’ practice squad. I see a winner there. What’s happening @Twitter? One minute, it’s laughing into the void. 2:57 Tags Twitter can’t believe no one got that I changed my twitter handle cuz I left for new york city— hey there Drelilah (@DreRonayne) January 10, 2019 Hahahahahahahaha— Twitter (@Twitter) January 8, 2019 Twitter’s new voice, which comes as the 12-year-old service is losing users, is drawing both praise and criticism. Some users are getting a good laugh from interacting with the corporate account, with @Twitter tweeting “You. In emojis” and “knock, knock.” But Twitter’s social media strategy has baffled some digital marketing experts who say it does little to repair the company’s bruised image or attract new users. Twitter reported 326 million monthly active users worldwide in the third quarter, a drop of 9 million users compared with the previous quarter. The company attributed the decline in part to its crackdown on bots, spam and malicious accounts. At a time when a photo of a brown egg is the most-liked photo on Instagram, some social media experts also see the cryptic tweets as an attempt by Twitter to grab the attention of a younger audience.Teens spend a lot of time on social media, meaning companies need to attract those users to continue their growth. Twitter makes money by showing targeted ads to users who engage daily on its site. 0 Taking advantage of the WTF moment, Twitter left it up to users to interpret the tweet, as if it was a work of modern art. “People really related to an empty space,” @Twitter said. Some commented on the tweet with remarks like “My bank balance on Monday” and “My soul”, and even with a photo of a blank piece of paper. Twitter is keeping the identity of its tweeters a secret, saying only “a few little birds” tweet from the @Twitter account. Dorsey isn’t one of them.”No one wants ‘edit button’ shouted at them in the street,” @Twitter quipped in an email when I asked why they wanted to stay anonymous. Twitter users often ask the company for a way to edit their tweets.Peter Wood, group director of the content lab at digital marketing agency 360i, said that with millions of users worldwide, the company has to find some “unifying way” to chat with its audience without excluding users in certain areas. He thinks the tweets are “very light-hearted” and “fun.””It just seems like they want to play with their audience,” Wood said. Laughter, after all, is universal. When Twitter tweeted “Hahahahahahahaha,” Twitter user @flashbackgray responded with “Can’t relate.” The Twitter user, who wants to remain anonymous, said in a direct message he wasn’t “feeling so good” that day. @Twitter fired back with the cheeky remark “Come back to it later.” It just seems like they want to play with their audience. Peter Wood, of digital marketing agency 360i Shama Hyder, CEO and founder of marketing firm Zen Media, said Twitter’s approach is “a little tongue-and-cheek.””At the same time, they’re trying a little too hard to make Twitter cool, edgy and relevant,” Hyder said. “This has always been Twitter’s challenge, by the way. They have a great platform, but they’ve never quite known what direction to take it in.”Guy Kawasaki, a former marketing executive at Apple, called Twitter’s tweets “pathetic” and “vacuous.” Instead, Twitter’s corporate account should set the “gold standard” for how to use social media.”With power comes responsibility,” said Kawasaki, who has nearly 1.5 million followers and has been tweeting since 2007. “And when you have the power of [56 million] followers, you would think you would do something useful.”The @Twitter account has tweeted phrases like “Weekends spark joy,” “Mmhmmmm,” “Awkward,” “The” and even nothing. That blank tweet on Nov. 29 was shared more than 61,200 times and garnered more than 222,100 likes. Roughly 15,000 users replied to the tweet. Twitter CEO and NBA head talk latest tech partnership Ronayne’s tweet and her username was a nod to the song Hey There Delilah by the Plain White T’s.”What’s it like there?,” @Twitter asked, referencing lyrics from the song. “Wish you weren’t a thousand miles away,” she responded with the next line of the song. At first, Ronayne was taken aback because she didn’t follow the @Twitter account. She also didn’t use the @ sign to alert the company about her tweet. Still, Twitter’s response gave her a good laugh. “I just found it really funny that they understood the joke in my tweet,” she said. “and went along with it.”Hahahahahahahaha.CES 2019: See all of CNET’s coverage of the year’s biggest tech show.Everything about Fortnite: What you need to know about the hit game. Share your voice Last week, @Twitter tweeted “brb.” Users chimed in. Bring back food, poop or some edit buttons, they said. At one point, Twitter said it was grabbing pizza “with no pineapple.”The goal of the @Twitter account is to “spark conversation,” according to the company. So far, that seems to be working. The amount of likes and retweets @Twitter received totaled 5.3 million from Sept. 1 to Jan. 23, up from 449,000 interactions in the preceding five-month period, according to CrowdTangle data. Twitter also said the number of replies to its tweets has grown 14 times.Dre Ronayne, a 23-year-old YouTuber from Los Angeles, changed her Twitter name to “hey there Drelilah” after she traveled to New York for work. The next minute, the social media site’s own Twitter account acts like your parents.”Go to sleep,” @Twitter told the account’s nearly 56 million followers on Jan. 10 at 8:30 p.m. PT. Tweets from @Twitter are meant to reflect “the lighter, more conversational nature” of the social network. Through absurdist humor and a dash of mystery, more than 70 of the company’s tweets posted since September are aimed at encouraging people to tweet more. That’s why the company prompts its own users to post with the question “what’s happening?””Tweets can stem from anything from a trend or joke we are seeing from Twitter users, to something going on in the world,” a Twitter spokeswoman said in a statement. But like Facebook and other tech firms, Twitter and its CEO, Jack Dorsey, are under fire for not doing enough to combat harassment, hate speech and the spread of misinformation on their platforms by Russian trolls during the 2016 US presidential election. In September Dorsey spent hours before Congress defending Twitter from allegations of political bias, and he pledged to improve the “health” of the platform. They’re trying a little too hard to make Twitter cool, edgy and relevant. A new app has now been released called Fartr, and it’s exactly what you’re thinking. The program lets you record, analyze and share your farts. Fartr cuts through the old taboos and calls itself the “official app of the body positive movement.”All you need to do is hold anywhere on the screen and, well, pass gas (preferably away from your loved ones or strangers) to make a recording. Fartr interprets the audio with a special algorithm and analyzes your flatulence based on volume, length, pitch and rhythm. The app will also provide a unique description of the “sound.” Fartr might describe it like a tuba, a flute or “two farts holding hands,” according to the app’s description. The fun doesn’t stop there. Next, you’ll get your Fartr score, which can be shared by way of text, email or social media if you’re particularly proud or competitive. Post a comment Share your voice Tags “At Fartr, we believe flatulence can be beautiful and unique, and we have built an app to capture that,” the company said in a release on Thursday. It’s $2 to take part in this potty humor, but a percentage of the proceeds are donated to causes that support Crohn’s and Colitis research, the release said. Film festivals are often described as a melting pot of cultures and that’s exactly what the much revered Indian Film Festival of Melbourne stands for. Taking their theme of courage forward, the year’s most notable Tamil film Super Deluxe is all set to be screened at the festival. The film, directed by Thiagarajan Kumararaja, has been nominated in the Best Actor, Best Director and Best Film categories at the event and has been hailed as the bravest film to come off Tamil cinema in a long time.Since IFFM is symbolic of the celebration of Indian cinema, it was necessary that the curated films be representative of the current wave of cinema in the country.Festival Director Mitu Bhowmick says, “In times of social media, when films can be consumed in a personal space, we are viewing films regardless of the language they are made in. Super Deluxe became an instant hit and the social media couldn’t stop raving about its nuanced treatment. It is essential for the world to see Indian cinema as more than just Hindi films. Though the explosion since Bahubali has rightly moved the focus to films made in regional languages, a broader audience have to be exposed to gems like Super Deluxe to understand the real power and potential of Indian films. It was, thus, essential for me to bring this beautiful film to the Indian audience in Melbourne. The film’s leading actor Vijay Sethupathi, actress Gayathri and the director Thiagarajan Kumararaja will also be at the festival to talk about this wonderful film”.Considered to be the right blend of pop culture and philosophy, the film’s director is equally excited to take his baby to a whole new set of viewers. He said, “An artistic work gives pleasure in two phases 1. When it is made 2. When it is consumed. I am very happy that Super Deluxe is transcending territories and language barriers. I’m looking forward to being at IFFM Australia” A poster from Vijay Sethupathi’s Super Deluxe.PR Handout RelatedVijay Sethupathi to play Muttiah Muralitharan in Sri Lankan legend’s biopic: ReportSpider-Man: Far From Home strikes gold in Chennai, outperforms Raatchasi and Kalavani 2Amala Paul’s nude act in Aadai costs Vijay Sethupathi’s VSP33; actress breaks silence on unceremonious ousting
An 18-year-old married woman was crushed to death by a speeding truck, which hit the motorbike on which she was pillion riding, in South Delhi’s Sarita Vihar area on Sunday night. Two other persons – her husband and sister-in-law – also suffered injuries but were reported to be in a stable condition by Monday evening. The deceased was identified as Shilpi (18). She was reportedly pillion riding with her husband, Govind (24), on a motorcycle. Govind’s sister, Babita (14) was sitting between Govind and Shilpi.
