Tendulkar, Sehwag pay tribute to Dhyan Chand on National Sports Day


first_imgSachin Tendulkar and Virender Sehwag were among others, who paid their tributes to hockey legend Dhyan Chand on his birthday — August 29, which is also celebrated as National Sports Day.Tendulkar, Sehwag and Laxman remembered Major Dhyan Chand on his 113th birth anniversary on Wednesday and paid their regards on Twitter to the man, who changed the face of Indian hockey.Born on August 29, 1905 in Allahabad, Dhyan Chand is remembered for his goal-scoring records and winning three Olympic gold medals in 1928, 1932 and 1936 as India dominated the sport.Dhyan Chand is also known as the ‘wizard’ for his exploits on the field. Dhyan Chand retired from the game in 1948 and eight years later, he was awarded the Padma Bhushan in 1956.The National Hockey Stadium in New Delhi — Dhyan Chand Stadium — is named after Dhyan Chand’s name.And India’s sporting icons and others had great things to say about the legend.Tendulkar spoke about the stories he heard about the legend while Sehwag tweeted about how Dhyan Chand’s magic brought people to the hockey stadiums.”I’ve heard stories about Major Dhyan Chand practising Hockey under a moonlit sky as there were no floodlights in those days.
