In an appalling incident, a national level shooter was sexually harassed in the CRPF Shooting Academy in Kadarpur, Haryana, last month. What was more shocking was the person who is alleged to have perpetuated the act was in charge of the academy mess. The incident happened when Rani (name changed) – an Army captain at the Army Infantry Centre, Mhow – was staying at the CRPF Academy. She was competing in the country’s apex championships – the National Big Bore Shooting Championships – which were held at the Kadarpur big bore ranges from May 2 to 5.It must be mentioned here that the resilient Rani won medals at these championships despite her harrowing experience. The incident occurred on the third day of the championships on May 4. It is learnt that after her competition, a tired Rani came back to her room to relax. It was at this juncture that the mess in charge barged into her room and tried to sexually harass the shooter, who rushed out of the room. This only came to light when Rani, after consulting with her parents, went ahead and lodged a protest with the Inspector General (IG) of the academy. The IG, Jasbir Singh Gill, was quick to take action and the mess in charge — who has not been named — was suspended within the next 24 hours.”I decided to lodge a complaint after holding protracted discussions with my parents. Also the fact that it happened during the competition was something which I was not prepared for at all. I do not have anything more to say on this episode,” Rani said.advertisementOn his part, Gill said it was a deplorable incident. “In my long association with the forces, such an incident has never happened. I cannot still comprehend how the whole thing happened.””Having said that, I took action fast, as it was a sexual harassment case,” he said.Subsequently, the CRPF has constituted an inquiry into the incident.”We have a lady commandant who is conducting an inquiry. We are looking into all aspects. Unfortunately, there are no eyewitnesses. We will go by the shooter’s version,” Gill said.He added that the future course of action would be decided after getting a reply from the mess in charge.”We have asked him to explain himself. After we get his written explanation, we will decide on what action should be taken against him,” said Gill.”If we find that the person is guilty, then he will be handed severe punishment. We will not tolerate any such acts in the future,” he said.
